WHAT IS CYCLOPS CENTRAL?

Cyclops Central is an online journal of pop culture news, commentary and analysis. Its focus is Show Business and the Media, which may include: television, movies, home entertainment, the internet, radio, newspapers, magazines, comic books and whatever other infotainment delivery system catches our eye.

If a work has been created to be consumed by an audience, then we’re interested in that work, the people who created it and the audience who consumes it.

We embrace both high and low culture. One day, we might discuss recurring visual motifs in the films of Jean-Luc Godard, while the next day, it’s the comedic genius of Shemp Howard. The following day, it’s the FCC’s position on Internet regulation and the next, it’s the work of film poster artist Frank McCarthy.

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE TITLE?

Our title is a small tribute to the greatly missed John Leonard, the New York magazine TV critic and CBS Sunday Morning commentator who wrote about television for Life magazine under the name “Cyclops”.  First Rule of Show Business: Always remember that we all stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.

WHAT’S CYCLOPS CENTRAL’S POLICY ABOUT SPOILERS?

Television has been around for over six decades. Movies, for over a century. Netflix has over 90,000 titles in its library. We have no way of knowing what you’ve seen and what you haven’t. And, while we have no interest in ruining the ending of a movie or TV show for anyone, the fact is that Cyclops Central exists to share information, not suppress it. So, a compromise: We promise to be careful, if you promise to read at your own risk.

GOT ANY CONTENT ADVISORIES?

Though Cyclops Central considers itself an all-ages experience, we do recognize that some visitors might run across something in this journal that runs counter to their sensibilities. In that case, we must politely ask that you take responsibility for your own peace of mind and find yourself the first exit out of Cyclops Central. We reserve the right to discuss mature material made for mature minds and that is a right that is protected under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. As such, some Cyclops Central content (including images, videos and links), may not be suitable for everyone. We’ll do our best to give you a heads-up but, ultimately, it’s your job to keep yourself and your sensibilities unaffected.

GOT ANY FASCINATING COPYRIGHT & FAIR USE INFO?

All written material contained on Cyclops Central is protected by United States copyright law and may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, displayed, published or broadcast without the prior written permission of Cyclops Central LLC or, in the case of third party ownership, the owner of that content, except in cases of Fair Use. Many of the still and streaming images appear here under the Fair Use provisions found in sections 107 through 118 of United States copyright law (title 17, U. S. Code), which allows for the reproduction of excerpts of a particular work for the purposes of criticism, comment, news reporting, research, teaching and scholarship for public benefit.

DO YOU ACCEPT MATERIAL FOR REVIEW?

Cyclops Central does indeed accept DVDs of movies and TV shows, books, comics, CDs, podcasts, fanzines and other media sent free of charge from studios, networks, producers, filmmakers, authors, publishers and other content creators. Receipt of those works may result in some notice or review here at Cyclops Central. However, this doesn’t mean that any promise is being offered that a creative work will be the subject of an endorsement or review, either positive or negative. If you’ve got something you’d like use to put an eye on, send us an email and we’ll give you our mailing address.

CAN I WRITE IN TO SUGGEST A TOPIC?

Absolutely. If you’re curious about any aspect of film/TV production, post-production or marketing, ask away. If you want to suggest a topic, recommend a movie or book or need some pop culture urban legend resolved, drop us a line. And, please, if you have some information for our Timeline (a significant event in Show Business or Media history, the birthday or passing of an industry professional), we’d love to add it to our growing database.
